How To Troubleshoot a Fluorescent Strip Light – Directions For The Diy Enthusiast
It is often thought that handiness around the house with plumbing, electrical appliances, a little masonry here and there, is an ability that comes naturally to some and is denied to others. There might actually be just a grain of truth to this, but not more than a grain. What comes naturally to these people is not an ability with these things, but an interest in understanding the mysteries of the inner workings of many of the things around us. Interest is all you need. Interest can often be artificially implanted with the encouragement derived from a little success in a few beginner’s projects around the house. Take, for instance, a project about a failed fluorescent strip light. To troubleshoot and repair a non-working strip light installation is the perfect project to take up to initiate oneself into the world of handiness.
A fluorescent strip light is basically made up of up to three individual electrical components; the light tube, the ballast, and the automatic starter. Troubleshooting a malfunctioning strip light installation then comes down to eliminating problems in one or the other. Such an undertaking usually begins with a mental assessment of the steps involved and an assessment of the right tools, material, and equipment that you can learn from the ImpactDriverGuide by clicking here. Approaching a strip light problem, you will need only a few general-use electrical tools. It should be a good idea to put together a step ladder to reach the light with, a pair of Lineman’s pliers to cut wires to join them again, a line tester, and a wire stripping tool.
The first order of business should be to determine the nature of the malfunction. A problem light could exhibit the symptom of being lit up only on either end, of flickering intermittently, or of being completely dead. The first problem, the one of having the tube light up only on either end, occurs only in older installations that use a starter; a faulty starter causes this sort of problem. All you need to do is to replace this inexpensive part. A starter is a small inch-high cylinder that is found located on the fixture body; depending on the model of fixture you have, you might find you can readily access it or find that it is located underneath the tube. To replace it, find access to it by removing the tube or anything else you need to, and put in a replacement. This could just solve the problem.
If the problem is a completely dead light or a flickering one, the first step should be to check the tube for incorrect seating. With the light switch turned on, climb up to the light, gently grip the tube by either end, and carefully twist it a quarter inch either way. If incorrect seating is the problem then this action could correct it and let the tube light up. If this doesn’t help, the next step would be to look at replacing the tube, starter or the ballast, in that order. Each of these components can cause very similar symptoms; so your best bet would be to work through them one by one. If replacing a tube or the starter does not successfully resolve the issue, consider replacing the most expensive component of the fixture, ballast.
Make sure that the power supply to the light you wish to work on is turned off at the source, preferably at the circuit breaker stage. Remove the tube and any protective cover that restricts access to the ballast. Make sure that it is not too hot to handle and proceed to unscrew any fasteners that hold it in place. There are, you will find, six color-coded wires making their way to the ballast; the black and the white are the main power supply. Make sure that the power is indeed turned off by using your line tester on the black wire. When all seems safe, first remove these two wires from the ballast and protect them with a dead cap. You will need to have a new ballast of the exact same specification as the one you have removed, to put back in its place.
Cut the wires to free the ballast from the old fixture and fasten the new ballast in place. The new ballast will have color-coded wires just the same as the old one that you have taken out. Simply connect yellow to yellow, green to green, and so on, with the help of a wire nut each. Connect the main power supply, the black and white wires, to the similarly-colored terminals on the ballast; you should be ready to test your new installation now.
Being handy around the house gives us a special sense of empowerment; the funny thing is that most people somehow think to shy away from being hands-on in their lives. It is easy to know how rewarding a little work here and there can be though just a little success fixing things around the house.
The Real Weapon Against Internet Downloads
I love “Torchwood.” And I’m not alone.
The “Doctor Who” spinoff has been watched and loved by millions of Brits enjoying a more adult approach to the Doctor’s universe filled with sex, cussing and the campy aliens we have grown to love.
For those of you who like to skip to the end, you might be scrolling down through this very column to see my personal tag at the bottom. I can see your eyebrows lower while you think about what you’re reading, and oh, there it is! Your eyes are widening in realization! Go ahead, ask it! I know you want to!”
“Mike, it says you live in Florida. How the heck are you enjoying the show with millions of other Brits?”
Well, the answer is an easy one, I just am not allowed to answer it. But if the BBC is reading, a couple members of the SyFy Portal staff live in the United Kingdom, and it’s very easy for them to send me DVDs or videotapes, so we’ll just leave it at that. But there are a lot of people, likely tens of thousands of people, who live outside the United Kingdom who are watching the show when officially, it’s not available to them. How are they getting it? Illegal downloads. And just like when Ronald D. Moore and David Eick groaned about the first season of “Battlestar Galactica” airing on Britain’s Sky One making it to American computers through illegal downloads, the BBC is hopping mad about the high-tech piracy that’s taking place over some of its programs.
I don’t blame BBC. Illegal downloads are just that: Illegal. No one needs to spell that out to me, or probably anyone else who actually partakes in such activities. BBC is funded through taxpayer dollars (well, taxpayers in the United Kingdom, not here), and BBC Three – which airs “Torchwood” – is a premium channel paid for by subscribers on top of that. Those outside the United Kingdom are doing nothing to finance the show or the pockets of whoever profits from BBC programming, and that equates to stealing pure and simple.
If we lived in a moralistic utopia, that would be enough to curb a growing problem. But since we live on Earth, that is not the case, and it’s going to take more than a moral conflict to get such activities under control. Just like Napster of a few years ago, it is going to take innovation from the industry (think: iTunes) to nip such pirating in the bud, but BBC may need some tutoring to catch on.
There is a debate taking place on the SyFy Portal message boards – you know, The SyBoards about whether or not BBC should get upset about piracy when they don’t offer alternative, legal means to obtain the programming. In fact, if you want to participate in the debate, you can find the thread right here. It’s hard to tell exactly what the main population thinks, but suffice it to say, many people who do download shows like “Torchwood” through illegal channels likely would download them through legal channels if given the opportunity.
To its credit, BBC is trying to offer such opportunities. The sad part is, it only seems to be happening in the United Kingdom. I don’t have piracy numbers sitting in front of me, but I would bet that most of their piracy takes place outside of the Queen’s empire, and not within its borders. But hey, that’s just me.
Whether there are alternatives or not, there is no ethical justification to illegally download programming. Call me hypocritical if you want, as long as you acknowledge from an ethical standpoint that I am right. Yeah, it stinks that BBC isn’t offering alternatives, but that doesn’t give anyone a license to fill (your hard drive with illegal downloads … hey, James Bond comes out today, what do you expect?) However, it’s hard to overlook the fact that finding the shows is easy, and acquiring them even easier. At high speed Internet connections, you can download an entire episode of “Torchwood” in less time than it takes to actually watch it.
At the same time, I have to re-address the same question I posed back in 2004 when Moore and Eick complained about the “Battlestar Galactica” downloads: Is downloading really as bad as you’re making it out to be? Is complaining about it doing nothing more than introducing such alternative means of acquiring shows to people who may not have known about it otherwise?
In “Battlestar’s” case, the number of downloads for each episode of the first season, by my own personal counts on bit torrent sites that I could find, was something like 80,000 to 100,000 tops. That sounds like a lot, and I’m sure is 80,000 to 100,000 more people than NBC Universal or any showrunner would like to see … publicly. But in the overall scheme of things, those 100,000 viewers represent a small fraction of the entire audience, and if those people like the show, the advanced word-of-mouth buzz – which is far better than even the best commercials you produce – could generate another 500,000 viewers for when the show actually airs. Talk about a publicity tool!
It’s not like studios don’t use those means, either. When Joss Whedon was marketing “Serenity,” I think they had like four sneak previews here in Tampa alone. The theaters were filled, probably about 1,000 screens each. Even if you hit the top 15 movie markets with sneak previews, you still probably let a good 100,000 or more people see the film for free, many of whom probably would’ve bought tickets anyway. But Joss and Universal knew what they were doing. Those 100,000 people would love the film. They would then go to their friends and family and say, “Wow! ‘Serenity’ is coming out in a couple weeks! You have to go see it!'” That buzz would then move on to things like “My sister’s friend saw ‘Serenity’ and said that if we’re not there when it opens, we’ll be left in the dust.”
Are the downloads of shows like “Torchwood” so terrible? Are the numbers so high that they actually have Nielsen families looking for some illegal download site? I doubt it. Yes, it’s wrong. Yes, companies like BBC will continue to complain about it. But you know, deep down, that the buzz generated from this piracy will create a better market for them overseas so that when they try to sell the show to places like SciFi Channel (or even Showtime), they have all that leverage. And any money lost, they’ll earn back 10 pounds to the 1. Don’t know what they call that in the United Kingdom, but here in America, that’s known as “ka-ching.”
Overall, to avoid any drawbacks using the Internet download, it is advisable to only visit websites and platforms that are reliable and trusted just like takethecoupon when you want to buy coupons from different stores. This will protect and make you safe from any loopholes.

Tips on How to Deal with Insomnia
Over 70 million people around the world and over 40 million people in the U.S have a sleeping disorder. Insomnia is the most common sleeping disorders out. Insomnia is when people can’t fall asleep no matter what they do. I have faced this disorder as well.
This is one that everyone experiences once they cross adolescence and become workaholics by slogging out in office day and night with little to no respite and although it disappears for a while, the indulgent lifestyle of such people allows the disorder to resurge.
In order to figure out if you have Insomnia, you have to ask yourselves some important questions. One question you should ask yourself is “do you experience difficulty sleeping?” If you answered yes to this question, then you are most likely a victim of a sleeping disorder.
I have had Insomnia in the past, though mine was short-term. I usually have Insomnia for about three weeks and then I am normal for a long period of time. If you have Insomnia for about three weeks or less, then it is short-term but if it lasts for more than a month, then you have long-term problems.
I was diagnosed after a series of complaints to my doctor. After complaining about days on end of no sleep, he told me that I had Insomnia. I had to keep a sleep diary to monitor my sleeping patterns and after three weeks, I noticed a pattern. After three weeks I no longer had trouble falling asleep. At first, I thought it was a coincidence and it was due to the long period of no sleep, but soon I found out that it was because I had short-term Insomnia.
I was very relieved. After those three weeks, I no longer had trouble sleeping nor did I have to deal with Insomnia again. In those three weeks, I did not take any medications because my doctor wanted to figure out if it was long-term or short-term.
My greatest struggle was coping with the little to no sleep I had. It was extremely difficult for me to function throughout the day without sleeping. I had to drink tons of coffee and some days even that did not help me. My tip to people around the world who are dealing with Insomnia is to sleep whenever they can. My greatest regret is not sleeping during the day when I wanted to.
While some people don’t have the opportunity to take naps, I strongly suggest they do because after that short period of time when you’re sleepy has passed, there is little chance you would be able to sleep again.
I also suggest not taking any medications until they have been thoroughly examined and diagnosed by a physician. People should also start keeping a sleep diary once they start to feel like they might have a sleeping disorder. While, it’s not necessary that you will truly be dealing with a disorder, it is still helpful and provides key details to your doctor.
Once you have been diagnosed, your doctor will be able to discuss medications that you need and treatments if they are necessary.
Computer Troubleshooting- An Insight Into The System Fixing Process
What do you do when you need to fix something that is broken? Well, you can try fixing it yourself but if the damage is too great, you would naturally call an expert to do the job.
When it comes to fixing, the process is quite hard and long because gadgets are not only technical but have to be dealt with a great deal of patience and perseverance for the problem to be solved quickly.
Human beings have become quite dependent on electronic items that and cannot hope to survive without it whether it is smartphone, desktop computer, tablet computer, laptop among software items or household appliances like television, refrigerator, tube light, fan, etc. to name a few.
Problem Analysis
The younger generation is quite impulsive while taking certain decisions in their life as they don’t think twice before proceeding to take what they think to be the right choice and it is never more evident than with computers.
The post millennial generation has had the good fortune of having digital media at their disposal right from their infancy and it has been found through a recent survey that kids have started handling tablet and smartphones right from the tender age of 3 that is the moment they become aware of their surroundings.
But as mentioned above, they are quite rash in taking certain decisions because they want to achieve results at quick speed as they are quite impatient so they themselves are the problem for which they need to conduct a SWOT analysis to learn from their mistakes and rectify them.
In short, problem analysis is the basis for achieving the best results in an industry as diverse and complex as software of which computer repairing is but a small but important part.
Self Reliance
Another human tendency that has been engraved in our psyche is that when we start out for learning something new, we have to rely on more learned individuals from the same field to understand the basics of what is being told.
But even after mastering the technique, certain people lack self confidence and have a severe inferiority complex in them after encountering failures in the initial stages, which in turn intensifies their feelings of dependency on more able shoulders and this is not something to be proud of.
Therefore, never get bogged down by failures because computer repairing is depends on electricity supply getting cut off so never depend on anybody so get used to self reliance as soon as possible.
Tips
Some important tips for repairing computer are as follows:
- There is an [google_bot_show][/google_bot_show]On-site laptop service in Perth that conducts online classes for beginners so it is better to enroll into it
- Kindly update your virus scanning software but it might make the system disabled so always keep a second opinion ready
- Get your operating system checked by software experts and carefully observe how they are working on it
- It is important to have a Wi-Fi connection so get a new model so as to get an upgraded version
The Guilt Factor when it Comes to Our Elderly Parents
Both my husband and I have been dealing with issues surrounding our elderly parents. Maybe by expressing our experiences, it will help other people to sort out their feelings and choices and maybe lessen the guilt factor a bit.
My family’s situation was very different than my husband’s. My father died at a young age, so my mother lived alone and independently for many years. When she was in her late seventies, we noticed a decline in her mental state. Yes, it was the beginning of Alzheimer’s. My siblings and I did all that we could to help our mother remain independent, but eventually, it was impossible to do so. We looked into assisted living facilities, all the while worrying about our mother becoming too incapacitated to be living alone. She eventually had a health problem that put her into a rehab facility for a short period of time. We then realized, with the guidance and opinions of health professionals along with toilet aids for elderly Australia, that it was time for our mother to have 24/7 care.
It still was a difficult decision. We were not a wealthy family, so the sale of my mother’s home was the only money we had to pay a nursing home to care for our mother. We went through the agony of clearing out her possessions and going through with the sale of her house. One slight humorous note was that while going through her belongings, we realized that our mother saved thousands of plastic bags and kept them in every nook and cranny of her house. None of us knew that. When we visited Mom, everything looked tidy, but beneath the surface were these plastic bags that I guess she felt might be needed someday. We had a good laugh over that.
I believe we made the right decision. Our mother ended up in a very nice facility that tended to her every need. Not only did they take care of her health needs, but they had a spot in the facility that did her hair and put nail polish on her nails. When we visited our mother, we felt she was well cared for. It took a lot of burden off of us. My siblings and I are all in our forties and fifties and had jobs and families and obligations that made it difficult to tend to the many needs of an elderly Alzheimer’s patient.
Just this past year, our mother passed away. Yes, sometimes I have pangs of guilt thinking that maybe I should have quit my job and taken care of my mother full time. But I know it would have taken its toll on me, and would not have been a good decision for me or for my mother. I and my siblings I feel we did the best we could, and that our father who died many years ago would be proud of how we took care of our mother. I hope so anyway.
Now my husband’s situation is very different. His father passed away this past year as well. That leaves his mother who is in her eighties and mentally she’s sharp as a tack. No Alzheimer’s there. However, she does have some health issues that require someone available to help her pretty much around the clock. A big concern is that the mother is adamantly opposed to the whole idea of going to any sort of an assisted living or nursing facility. My husband’s older sister volunteered to take her mother in and tend to her care. That is a very generous and monumental decision to be sure.
She and her husband are both retired and much more financially well off than the rest of the family. Therefore, they like to travel and want to do that as much as possible while they’re still in relatively good health. We believe though they may have some resentment that the other siblings are not stepping up to the plate to help out in the way they expected. To be fair, the other siblings are not as well equipped to take care of an elderly parent due to smaller homes, limited finances, and many are not home during the day because of work responsibilities. It’s not a lack of love or of uncaring that more assistance is not provided. But we do feel bad that we can’t offer more help than we do. What we do is stay in touch with their mother, as well as visiting and taking her out to dinner now and then.
Bottom line is that mother’s care should probably be done by a facility, even if it’s just for an occasional stay called “respite care” while her caregivers are traveling. There is enough money to provide that for her, but the logistics of accomplishing that may be difficult. No one wants the mother to feel abandoned or unloved, but she seems to feel that way even if we’re just discussing temporary stays. Her children are all still living their lives and have many responsibilities. We also have our own health issues as well. We think the mother is expecting her children to take up the role that her late husband provided, but that is unrealistic. Since we are right in the midst of this family crisis, I’m not sure how this is going to pan out.
Knowing how to handle our parents’ declining years is fraught with worry and guilt and indecision. We do love and want to honor our mother and father, however, we can’t always measure up to their high expectations. Their generation seems to believe that it is our responsibility to become 24/7 caregivers, no matter what the consequences are to our own responsibilities and ongoing lives. And I don’t believe putting that kind of burden on all of us is the right thing to do. On the other hand, we know we are next in line to be in their shoes, but we do not want to put those same feelings of guilt on our own grownup children. Since the baby boomer generation is slowly becoming our senior citizens, I do wish our government was helping out more with the high costs of taking care of our older generation.
Issues such as these are the things that have the potential to tear family members apart. That is why it is so important for cooler heads to prevail and to keep the lines of communication open. No one, no matter how close, really knows the private battles each of us faces every day within our own lives. So we should not judge and put expectations on one another that may be unrealistic. Our elder generation deserves to be treated with dignity and to have their needs taken care of. There is nothing wrong with families using some of the services available out there to help us take care of our parents. There are many wonderful facilities that provide assistance and good nursing care, as well as in-home care and programs such as Meals On Wheels.
It may take a while to determine what the right thing is to do as we see our parents slowly losing their independence and watching their health decline. But with patience and understanding, we can be a team with our siblings and other family members to figure out the best options for all concerned. But since we’re caring human beings, I guess we will always have that little bit of guilt that we’re not doing enough. But we know we’re doing the best we can.

The Perfect Haircut- Ultimate Way To Enter Another’s Heart
The current generation aspires to have too many things at the same time and wants to achieve it all in one go as a result of each they end up biting off more than they can chew, which is why their ilk is advised not to do anything brash and tread the path with care and caution.
It’s a known fact that youngsters are obsessed with looks as they feel that it is what makes other people, especially the opposite sex, notice them and they are put in the spotlight but what is interesting is that both boys and girls want to live that way where the latter has overtaken the former in terms of modern and straightforward thinking.
Compared to today, there weren’t enough facilities in ancient times to give your face a makeover baring a few exceptions and we are going to talk about one of them in this article simply because it is still practiced to this day.
Haircutting Technique
Haircut is the topic chosen for today and why it is so important in our lives is difficult to explain but of course its main objective is to get rid of those extra locks and make oneself look good.
There are many fashion icons among males who love keeping long and unruly mops and flowing to such an extent that they can easily pass of as females in first glance and this trend has become a fashion statement ever since the advent of the 21st century.
Nevertheless, it is still important that you cannot have large quantities of hair for long, not even females and especially in the peak summer months of May and June when you start perspiring the moment you step out of the house and those extra locks will make things cruelly intolerable.
Therefore, it is important for both sexes to have a haircut every once in a while and it won’t do you any harm as you can grow back hair within a matter of months but the trend that began in the early 2000s persists to this day.
The haircutting technique is something that the barbers are experts at, which is why many of them are working at Porsche saloons and beauty parlors and have a nice livelihood to boast about.
Flawless Cut
It has been explained above why hair cut for men is necessary and so let us look at some of the important ways to get the perfect haircut to make yourself the cynosure of all eyes and something that would have the gals eating out of your hand.
They are as follows:
- The most important step is to conduct extensive research if you are new to the place as you just can walk into a random shop without knowing the skills of the barber so look up for such hotspots online and choose the best option based on ratings and reviews
- Start a conversation with the barber to build a connection and inform him everything about what kind of a cut you want because if you don’t do so, the barber might give you any cut of your choice and you may not like it
- If you are not able to convey it properly, show him a picture of the hairstyle that you want so that both of you are clear in mind
- Instead of choosing a hairstyle of your favorite celebrity, go with a cut that would suit the shape of your face otherwise it would look extremely awkward and this incongruity is what would the girls off and they will be forced to keep their distance from you as in their eyes, you have no fashion sense
Wake Up, Florence!
My favorite time to get acquainted with a city is early in the morning when the weather is at its best and the air is fresh. The few precious hours following the dawn offer the best photo opportunities, before the tourists and street-ramblers flood the city and spoil the scenery for a good picture of a fountain, bridge, cathedral, or the duomo. More importantly, there is also just something amazing about watching a city awaken, observing the lifeless streets as they gradually come alive and burst with activity.
The sun rose over Florence, Italy, at 6:38 a.m., slowly illuminating the classic edifices that cast their shadows on the almost-too-narrow cobblestone streets. I wanted to be outside in the cool morning air before the heat came. The river shimmered as it flowed under numerous arches, including the Ponte Veccio, boasted as one of the oldest medieval bridges in Italy. Large wooden boxes with giant chains and padlocks occupied much of the bridge’s interior walls. As the shopkeepers slowly appeared, they swung open the lids of these ugly boxes and transformed them into quaint, yet attractive, tourist shops. These shops hung out over the water, slanting and sagging. Gondolas passed by on the river every once in a while, with a faint splash of the oars.
As the sun shone more brightly, eliminating the shadows on the buildings and revealing their true color; black gave way to chocolate brown, as the drab gray turned bluish. A distant tower materialized across the bridge, a brown stone structure, resembling a castle monolith. I continued walking down the sidewalks, capturing everything on film. Some of my best pictures are created in the soft rays of the morning light.
One restaurant worker, equipped with a green apron, wiped the outside tables with cherry-red cloths and swept underneath the tables. A typical breakfast in Europe consists of fruit, pastries, bread, and spread (usually chocolate). Florence was no different. Driven by hunger, the sweet smells lured me into the eatery.
Once inside I met one of the few other people who were awake at such an early hour without the reason of needing to go to work. The waiter led me over to a blue and green swirled table, where I dined beside an Italian-speaking man. This man, whose name was Carmello, did not view the language barrier as a problem. He continued to chatter in his beautiful Italian to me, even though most of the time I could offer only a smile and a blank gaze in return. Still, he didn’t give up trying to converse with me, offering me biscotti and pointing out city sights on my tourist map.
Outside the restaurant, the hubbub was reaching its peak. Honking horns and other traffic sounds came infrequently from those brave enough to make an attempt at maneuvering their vehicles through the hustle and bustle. Except for one section of town by the library where motorcyclists kept driving in, parking, and then dashing off to their desired destinations and except for the few Peugot drivers, everyone else walked or traveled by bike. Professional-looking women dressed in short skirts and tan suit jackets and men in darker suits rode their bikes as if they were wearing casual clothing.
Soon the early morning aroma of baking bread was lost, snatched away by a breeze from the river, and replaced by the stench of tobacco and cigarette smoke. The sidewalks filled up with the loud noises of chattering Italians, a cell phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Many of these Firenzians were always smiling and laughing, and like Carmello, they seemed ready to make conversation with anyone, especially foreigners.
Florence was fully awake, and after my breakfast, so was I. I was ready to start the day, content in knowing that I had beaten the tourists and had already seen Florence the way it really is.
